Summary

The firmness of apples is one of the key criteria sought by buyers. The forthcoming market launch of the SmartFresh ethylene inhibitor is creating lots of excitement in the sector, because of its proven effect on maintaining firmness, even after the fruit is taken out of cold storage. This device, which is effective even at very low dosages, offers the additional advantage of effective prevention of scald. Thermotherapy (treatments using hot water) also appears to hold promise for the control of fungal and physiological diseases. This article describes other alternatives to the usual chemical treatments, notably for prevention of scald.
