Summary

At the moment, especially CO2 has a great interest as a secondary refrigerant for low temperature applications. In the past, CO2 was well known as a refrigerant on board vessels, but it disappeared after the introduction of synthetic refrigerants. Due to environmental issues, natural refrigerants like CO2 seem to be on revival. A feasibility study to investigate the use of CO2 as a refrigerant for a new cold store project has been done in the Netherlands and based on the positive outcomes with respect to COP, the effect on the environment and financial benefits, the decision has been made to start its construction (see also IIR Bulletin, reference 2002-0905).
