Summary

Recently, ice slurry has attracted much attention in order to save the energy of air conditioning device. The helically coiled pipes are used on the supposition of a heat exchanger in a dynamic-type ice thermal storage system. In this study, flow and heat transfer characteristics of ice slurry in some helically coiled pipes have been investigated. The flow visualization, pressure loss and heat transfer coefficient of ice slurry were measured as a function of ice packing factor (IPF), flow velocity, heat flux and coil radius. It was found that the flow resistance of ice slurry in a helically coiled pipe is influenced with the interaction between the friction force effect of the ice particles and the turbulent increase due to the secondary flow. The heat transfer coefficient of ice slurry in a helically coiled pipe increases with increasing the melting ratio of the ice particles except that all ice particles are melted. And useful correlations for predicting the flow resistance and heat transfer coefficient of the ice slurry were proposed in terms of some non-dimensional parameters.
