Summary
Boiling of refrigerants in microchannels is an efficient strategy for heat dissipation and cooling management, particularly for nascent electronic applications, owing to their rapid increase in size and performance. The target of this work was to explore the boiling of R513a in two different microchannels, namely a rectangular cross section microchannel (RMC) and an enhanced microchannel (EMC). The latter is characterized by rectangular cavities inside walls. A three dimensional numerical CFD simulation was implemented for the boiling process, utilizing updated correlations of the departure diameter for bubbles in addition to the density of the nucleation sites. The boiling was investigated at a saturation temperature of 298.15 K and at mass velocities of 200, 300, and 400 kg⋅m-2⋅s-1 with heat fluxes of 45, 60, and 75 kW⋅m-2 while the inlet degree of subcooling was fixed at 5 K. The present simulation model predicted the boiling heat transfer coefficient (HTC) within deviation of 3.2 % compared to experimental data. It could be shown that the rectangular cavities boosted flow boiling via breaking down large bubbles and interrupting continual vapor layers. Sharp corners of the cavities promoted boiling process as they provided artificial microgrooves for nucleation of bubbles. The dry-out case could be remarkably mitigated for the RMC at mass velocity of 200 kg m-2 s-1 with heat flux of 75 kW⋅m-2. The results showed that the boiling HTC of the EMC was enhanced by 6 %, 9 %, and 14 % for mass velocities equal to 400, 300, and 200 kg⋅m-2⋅s-1, respectively, compared to the RMC.
