Summary

Most of the previously published flow pattern maps for plate heat exchangers have been based on air-water experiments. In this study, vertical downward flow of condensing ammonia in a gasketed plate heat exchanger is visualized. Polystyrene is tested on its chemical compatibility to liquid ammonia and proven to be resistant for several days. A 25 mm thick transparent plate has been machined from Polystyrene and Polymethylmethacrylaat with the same corrugation profile as the stainless steel heat transfer plates. The study distinguishes between partial film and film flow and the influence of mass flux and vapor quality is observed. The experimental operational conditions are compared to a flow pattern map of air/water two-phase flow in plate heat exchangers and film transition lines in mini-tubes. The results show that more visualization studies are required to extend the applicability of the flow pattern map for different condensing fluids inside gasketed plate heat exchangers.
