Summary
Traditional direct-expansion plants have been used for many years and do not require much investment, but they have an important impact on the environment. Plants using secondary refrigerants are currently the most environmentally-friendly systems thanks to their low refrigerant charge, their tightness and their energy efficiency, which can be improved by using ice slurries. Investment levels are slightly higher than those of direct expansion, but they could be reduced further, particularly by using ice slurries, once equipment is mass-produced.
