Summary

SOME WORK HAS BEEN DONE PREVIOUSLY ON UPWARD FLOW OF WATER OUTSIDE VERTICAL TUBES IN TRIANGULAR PITCH AT LOW REYNOLDS NUMBERS, BUT LITTLE FOR DOWNWARD FLOW. THE TESTS DESCRIBED COMPARE RESULTS FOR DOWNWARD FLOW WITH UPWARD FLOW IN THE SAME TEST RIG. THE RESULTS SHOW THAT THE TRANSITIONAL REYNOLDS FOR BOTH FLOWS IS THE SAME. ALSO THAT FOR DOWNFLOWS THE BEST CORRELATIONS FOR BOTH FORCED AND NATURAL LAMINAR FLOWS WERE WITH A SQUARE EXPONENT OF NUSSELT, WHEREAS FOR UPWARD FLOWS A CUBIC EXPONENT WAS MORE APPLICABLE. THE NUSSELT FOR NATURAL LAMINAR FLOW WAS NEGATIVE FOR DOWNFLOW AND POSITIVE FOR UPFLOW, REFLECTING THE BUOYANCY EFFECT. D.W.H.
