Summary

THE AUTHOR HAS PRODUCED A FUNDAMENTAL ANALYSIS OF FREEZING ON THE OUTSIDE OF A SINGLE TUBE THROUGH WHICH A COOLANT FLOWS. AXIAL CONDUCTION AND HEAT CAPACITY EFFECTS HAVE BEEN NEGLECTED. FURTHER WORK IS REFERRED TO IN WHICH A BANK OF TUBES HAS BEEN STUDIED. THE OUTCOME OF THIS ANALYTICAL APPROACH IS THE DEVELOPMENT OF FORMULAE WHICH REPRESENT THE PROCESS WITH GOOD ACCURACY AND FROM WHICH SOME IMPORTANT FACTORS CAN BE SEEN, EG THE EFFECTIVENESS OF SUCH A HEAT EXCHANGER SIMILAR TO THAT WHERE THE PHASE CHANGE FOR ONE FLUID IS BETWEEN LIQUID AND VAPOUR.
