Freeze damage and cold hardiness in olive: findings from the 1990 freeze.

Summary

An extensive review of the climatic conditions in California during December 1990 is given together with the effect of low temperatures on olive trees such as tip burn, defoliation, bark splitting and limb dieback. Some cultivars were more susceptible to damage and acclimatization is an important limiting factor. Cold hardiness is influenced by pruning, irrigation and fertilization, and injuries varied according to their level of application. Types of freeze damage are detailed and illustrated, and recommendations are given to growers to limit freezing damage. G.R.S.
