Ground-source heat pump systems in Japan.

Summary
Although the installation costs are higher than for conventional systems, there are currently only around 15 systems installed throughout the country. A few ground-source heat pumps have also been installed for melting snow on roads in snowy areas. Around 10 universities and research institutes are currently conducting research related to underground heat exchangers and their utilisation.
