Summary

BIOHAZARDS, OCCURRING IN LOW TEMPERATURE STORAGE OF PURE BIOLOGICAL OBJECTS CAN MENACE BOTH PERSONNEL AND THE MATERIAL PROPER. FROM FOUR KINDS OF BIOHAZARDS, IE CHEMICAL, BIOLOGICAL CONTAMINATION, INTELLECTUAL AND PHYSICAL RISKS TWO FORMER ARE DISCUSSED. THE DANGER OF THESE HAZARDS IS GREATER IF CONTACT COOLING WITH DRY ICE OR LIQUID NITROGEN IS USED, OR WHEN COOLANT VAPOURS CAN COME BY CHANCE IN CONTACT WITH THE OBJECT STORED. THAT IS WHY MECHANICALLY REFRIGERATED EQUIPMENT SHOULD BE PREFERRED. ALSO DISCUSSED ARE HAZARDS TYPICAL FOR THE FREEZE-DRYING PROCESS AND MEASURES TO BE TAKEN FOR THEIR PREVENTION.
