Summary

Many commercial and industrial applications use a great deal of energy for heating and cooling. These applications typically use gas-fired water heaters or boilers to produce hot water and electric powered mechanical refrigeration systems for cooling. A newly commercialized heat-activated heat pump/ chiller (HAHP/C), driven by thermal energy from a range of possible sources—fuel, steam, solar heat, or waste heat— produces both hot and cold water at the same time. Relative to the activation heat, the heating efficiency is 154%, and the free chilling increases the overall efficiency to over 200%. In many applications, the energy savings alone yields a two-year-or-less payback period, i.e. without credit for the increased capacity for heating and chilling. The HAHP/C is a modified ammonia-water absorption cycle. The solution flow path is altered, and proprietary heat and mass exchangers are added. The result is heat rejection at temperatures high enough to produce hot water in the range of 51.7°C to 71.1°C (125°F to 160°F), with 93.3°C (200°F) possible at reduced efficiency. This thermal heat pump has only one mechanically powered component—the pump for the ammonia solution. It is immune to freeze-up or crystallization problems that can plague other absorption systems. The HAHP/C replaces both boiler and chilling equipment yet weighs just 50 pounds per ton of chilling capacity. An 88 kW (25-ton) unit has a footprint of 0.9m by 1.5m (3ft by 5ft). The HAHP/C can be used at industrial and commercial sites where a combination of hot water and some chilling capacity is required. Sites that meet these conditions include: food-processing plants, dairies, breweries, restaurants, laundries, commercial kitchens, hospitals, apartment buildings, motels, gymnasiums, and indoor swimming pools. This paper describes the technology and the results achieved from several field demonstrations.
