Heat pump applications in the food industries.

Author(s) : ROWLES P. A.

Summary

The food industries use food processing technologies that are well-suited for heat pumps. In many processes both heating and cooling demands occur which allow the use of heat pumping technologies. In this presentation, the application of electric heat pumps within selected typical food processing operations is addressed and the main system application areas including refrigeration heat recovery, effluent heat recovery, dryer heat recovery, dehumidification with heat recovery and mechanical vapour compression is discussed. The benefits of using an industrial heat pump are not limited to energy cost savings, but include improved operating characteristics (drying), increased capacity and reduced emissions (gases, odour).
