AN EVALUATION OF REFRIGERATION SYSTEMS FOR DEEP LEVEL GOLD MINING.

Author(s) : STROH R. M., KOURELOS J.

Summary

NEW MINES ARE CURRENTLY BEING PLANNED TO OPERATE AT GREAT DEPTH (4,000 M) AND HIGH VIRGIN ROCK TEMPERATURES AND REQUIRING LARGE AMOUNTS OF REFRIGERATION FOR UNDERGROUND COOLING. FOR THESE MINES, THE TRADITIONAL SURFACE-BASED COLD WATER REFRIGERATION PLANTS BECOME VERY EXPENSIVE AND IMPRACTICAL TO OPERATE. A NUMBER OF OPTIONS FOR MINE COOLING INCLUDING THE USE OF ICE ARECOMPARED AGAINST THE TRADITIONAL SYSTEMS AND THE RESULTS ARE REPORTED IN THE PAPER.
