Heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics for flat oval aluminium tubes.

Author(s) : SCHNEIDER P., MADSEN K. B., ESPEDAL A., et al.

Summary

The paper presents measurements of the heat transfer during condensation and evaporation inside two flat oval tubes. The working fluids are R410A and R717. Flat oval tube-in-fin heat exchangers for air-to-refrigerant operation with different geometrical configurations were investigated under a variety of conditions. The tube refrigerant used is water. Parallel to the heat transfer investigation, pressure drop investigations were performed on the single tube as well as on the heat exchanger. The test results for the single tubes were compared with different heat transfer and pressure drop models. The models are based on circular tubes. The models showed good agreement with measurements. The Friedel correlation for pressure drop calculation can be recommended and Shah's correlation to calculate the heat transfer coefficient during evaporation can also be recommended for flat oval tubes. For condensation Aker's correlation can be used to calculate the heat transfer coefficient. A comparison for heat exchangers with round tube and fins showed that heat exchangers with a flat oval tube give lower fan power and better thermal performance.
