Summary

AN ANALYTICAL STUDY WAS PERFORMED TO DETERMINE WHETHER IT IS POSSIBLE TO UNIFORMLY FREEZE OR THAW BIOLOGICAL TISSUE BY PERFUSION WITH A FLUID THAT TRANSFERS HEAT ALONG THE VASCULAR SYSTEM. A SIMPLE CRITERION WAS DEVELOPED TO EVALUATE THE THERMAL PERFORMANCE OF HEAT TRANSFER FLUIDS. THE RESULTS SHOW THAT FLUIDS THAT HAVE BEEN CONSIDERED IN THE PAST FOR HEATING OR COOLING BY PERFUSION ARE UNABLE TO TRANSFER HEAT UNIFORMLY THROUGH THE TISSUE.
