Summary
THE ARTICLE SURVEYS SEVERAL CASES INVOLVING THE FLOW OF FLUIDS ACROSS COMPARTMENTAL BARRIERS, AS ALSO HEAT FLOW IN ORGANS AND TISSUES. ONE EXAMPLE IS THAT THE BIOPHYSICS OF THE ADDITION OR REMOVAL OF PERMEABLE CRYOPROTECTANTS IS FOUNDED ON THE FLOW OF WATER ACROSS CELL MEMBRANES. OTHER EXAMPLES ARE THE HYDRAULIC COEFFICIENT, CELL VOLUME AND THE FLOW CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CRYOPROTECTANT ITSELF ACROSS NON-FROZEN BIOLOGICAL MEMBRANES. LABORATORY METHODS CAN BE USED TO OBTAIN INFORMATION NECESSARY TO CALCULATE THE CRYOPROTECTANT PERMEABILITY AND THE CRYOPROTECTANT CONCENTRATIONS ON EITHER SIDE OF BIOLOGICAL MEMBRANES. VARIOUS AUTHORS ARE QUOTED WITH REGARD TO THEIR WORK ON PHYSICAL MODELS, COOLING AND WARMING RATES, CELL SURVIVAL, HEATTRANSFER IN ORGANS, THE PHYSICS OF WATER SOLIDIFICATION IN BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS, ETC.
