Heat transfer enhancement and parametric study on the cold thermal energy storage system.

Summary

A new method of using aluminium foils in the cold thermal energy storage system (CTES) is put forward, and a 2D numerical investigation of the CTES involving phase-change process dominated by heat conduction is conducted by Fluent. By predicting the temperature distribution and the phase front distribution, the computation results show that adding foils is an efficient way to enhance the heat transfer in the CTES. Furthermore, parametric studies are carried out to assess how the performance of the storage is affected by the effects oF the number of foils, foil thickness, tube arrangement and the tube wall temperature. Graphical results are presented, discussed and equations relating the effect of each of the variables on the time for complete solidification are also given.
