Simulation of heat transfer enhancement in a cold thermal energy storage system.

Author(s) : GUO C., WEI X., WANG D., et al.

Summary

Phase-change material is the most promising material for cold thermal energy storage system (CTES) used in air conditioning equipment. However, it is not used on a commercial scale, not only because of its low heat conductivity, but because of the surface heat flux decreases due to increasing thermal resistance of the molten or solidified medium. Therefore, heat transfer enhancement is essential for CTES. Here, the authors present a method to improve heat transfer in the CTES. The model for the solidification around the radial aluminium foils is developed, and two-dimensional simulations are performed using the Fluent software. The phase interface position, temperature distribution, the time for complete solidification and surface heat flux are obtained. The computation results show the heat transfer process, and the effects of aluminium foil and the distance between foil on heat transfer enhancement.
