Heat transfer in highly convective gaseous helium 4 flow.

Author(s) : CASTAING B., CHABAUD B., CHAVANNE X., et al.

Summary

Gaseous helium 4 close to the critical point presents very specific hydrodynamic characteristics: a very low kinematical viscosity and thermal diffusivity together with a diverging thermal dilatation. It is then possible to reach in a typically 10 cm size cell extremely high Rayleigh numbers. In a first series of experiments, the authors have measured the heat transfer in such conditions, reaching Nusselt numbers above 5000. They have evidenced a new behaviour and performed new experiments in a cell with characteristic changes of the boundary layer. Both series of experiments are presented and compared.
