Summary

The simultaneous measurement of local heat transfer coefficients and local particle velocities presents a unique opportunity to examine the mechanisms of heat transfer to immersed surfaces in fluidized beds. The results showed that there is a lack of consistent correlation between particle dynamics and surface-to-bed heat transfer, either local or average. This finding casts doubt on the validity of heat transfer models that are based solely on particle convection.
