Heating of a supermarket with the refrigeration system.

Summary
In a northern country like Sweden food refrigeration systems in supermarkets have enough heat for the heating of the building during winter. This has been known for many years but not often utilized until recently. In an existing supermarket, about 3000m2 , a part of the installed refrigeration system is used for heating of the total building. The condenser heat may be utilized in three different ways: high enough condensing pressure to directly heat the circulating air in the ventilation system; a heat pump for utilizing high enough temperatures for ventilation systems designed for district heating or fossil fuel. This will even cover tap water heating; trans critical CO2 used for heating. In this paper the case with a heat pump solution is presented. Measurement includes the heat flow from the heat pump and electrical power used for the installed heat pump. Before the installation the refrigeration capacity has been lowered by the installation of doors on cabinets. This also gives less need for heating the indoor environment as the cooling of the indoor air by infiltration from the cabinets is lowered. In this supermarket, for the ventilation system, less fresh air is needed as the ventilation is controlled by CO2 sensors in the exhaust air. This is a result based on that supermarkets have a very high portion of uncontrolled ventilation through e.g. doors and ports.
