HFC-161 and its mixtures as alternative refrigerants.

Author(s) : CHEN G. M., HAN X. H.

Summary

HFC-161 is an environmentally friendly refrigerant which is not destructive to the ozone layer and has a very low global warming potential. It has a high cooling capacity and an excellent energy efficiency, offering tangible economic and social benefits. But this refrigerant is flammable if used alone. Refrigerant mixtures with HFC-161 are considered to be new and promising alternative refrigerants. The authors proposed and studied a series of refrigerant mixtures of HFC-161. In this paper, they report vapour pressure and P-V-T behaviour of pure HFC-161, vapour-liquid equilibrium of HFC-161 mixtures, cycle performance of the refrigerant mixtures and some results of the flammable behaviours of the new refrigerant mixtures. The studies show that the proposed new mixtures have great potential to be excellent refrigerants. But there are still some key technology barriers to be surmounted before using such refrigerants, such as refrigerant-lubricant compatibility, materials compatibility and other issues.
