R502 substitution: a global evaluation of the environmental impact.

Summary

R502 has been very largely used in vapour compression refrigerating systems, particularly for applications requiring evaporating temperatures below -35 deg C. Unfortunately it is an "ozone-killer" fluid because it contains a fraction of R115 and efforts are underway to find a substitute. Among the possible alternatives are R125, R32 and R32/R125 which are completely "ozone safe", and R69-S which is a drop-in alternative but a not definitive solution since it contains some R22 fraction. In the paper a comparative analysis in terms of total equivalent warming impact is presented.
