Summary

TWO TYPES OF STACKING FAULTS IN THIS SUPERCONDUCTOR WERE DIRECTLY OBSERVED BY MEANS OF HIGH RESOLUTION ELECTRON MICROSCOPY. THEY RESULTED FROM AN EXTRA COPPER-OXYGEN LAYER INSERTED BETWEEN THE BARIUM-OXYGEN LAYERS AND DOUBLE COPPER-OXYGEN LAYERS, EITHER EXTENDING THROUGH THE CRYSTAL OR TERMINATING WITHIN THE CRYSTAL. WHERE THE FAULTS TERMINATED, THE PARTIAL DISLOCATIONS WITH BURGERS' VECTOR WERE FOUND, WHICH FURTHER CONFIRMS THAT THE FAULTS ARE NOT CAUSED BY A YTTRIUM-OXYGEN LAYER BEING TAKEN AWAY FROM PERFECT CRYSTAL, BUT BY AN EXTRA COPPER-OXYGEN LAYER INSERTED BETWEEN BARIUM-OXYGEN LAYERS. IT WAS ALSO OBSERVED THAT 2 TYPES OF FAULTS CAN COEXIST SIDE BY SIDE IN THE SAME PLANE WITH A SHARP TRANSITION REGION. A STRUCTURE MODEL OF THE PARTIAL DISLOCATION WITH BURGERS' VECTOR IS PROPOSED TO EXPLAIN THE TRANSITION REGION.
