Summary

In 1986, it was discovered that certain materials tended to become superconducting at relatively high temperatures. The prospect of cooling superconductors with liquid nitrogen instead of liquid helium, and the impact on basic physics of the discovery of these new compounds, lead to an unprecedented activity amongst the scientific world. Today the first applications of high-temperature superconductors are beginning to appear. As the authors explain on basic principles, the nature of the superconducting state is now clear. On the other hand, and contrary to all expectations, their normal state is presenting a number of difficulties. Although the term "revolution", used at the time of their discovery, turned out to be somewhat premature, high-temperature superconductors remain nevertheless very promising for the future and scientific interest is likely to be sustained.
