SUPERCONDUCTORS, THE SECOND WIND: THEORETICAL AND TECHNOLOGICAL BASES.

SUPRACONDUCTEURS, LE DEUXIEME SOUFFLE : FONDEMENTS THEORIQUES ET TECHNOLOGIQUES.

Author(s) : BRUNET Y.

Type of article: Article, Review

Summary

THE FOLLOWING AREAS ARE CONSIDERED: CURRENT STATE OF SUPERCONDUCTORS ; BASIC PROPERTIES OF THE SUPERCONDUCTOR STATE ; THE TWO TYPES OF SUPERCONDUCTIVITY: THEIR MICROSCOPIC ASPECT AND BRIEF INFORMATION ON THEIR THEORY ; CURRENT TRANSPORT IN SUPERCONDUCTORS ; THE CRITICAL STATE AND ITS CONSEQUENCES ; STABILITY CRITERIA. THE MAIN TYPES OF SUPERCONDUCTING MATERIALS, THEIR METHODS OF FABRICATION AND THEIR APPLICATIONS ARE REVIEWED. THE CRYOGENIC ENVIRONMENT OF SUPERCONDUCTORS AND THE PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS AT LOW TEMPERATURES ARE ALSO DEALT WITH. AS A CONCLUSION, IT IS UNDERLINED THAT THE TECHNOLOGY AND PERFORMANCE OF LOW TEMPERATURE SUPERCONDUCTORS ARE WELL DEFINED NOWADAYS, WHICH IS NOT THE CASE YET FOR HIGH TEMPERATURE SUPERCONDUCTORS, FOR WHICH SEVERAL YEARS OF FURTHER RESEARCH WILL BE NECESSARY -DESPITE THEIR CRYOGENIC INTEREST -BEFORE REAL INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENTS ARE ACHIEVED.
