Summary

Interest in the application of refrigerating systems using natural refrigerants is growing. The focus is on hydrocarbons such as R290, R600a and R600, along with non-azeotropic mixtures. Combined equations of state were developed for R170, R290 R600a and R600 and non-azeotropic mixtures, in order to elucidate thermodynamic properties and cycle characteristics. Non-regenerative and regenerative thermodynamic cycles using the mixtures investigated were classified. Several hermetic compressors working on R12, R134a, hydrocarbons and their mixtures were tested, and a mathematical model was developed in order to express volumetric and power losses with respect to pressure increase. Optimal cycle pressures and their impact on mixtures and structures were defined in order to determine efficiency. The authors indicate additional ways of improving small refrigerating systems using non-azeotropic mixtures of hydrocarbons.
