Summary

For the 4th R&D Framework Programme of the European Commission, a workshop was held in June, 1993, in Brussels, Belgium. A survey of the Euro-Quebec Hydrogen Project, covering numerous aspects of hydrogen production from clean energy sources, storage and distribution up to the end-use of hydrogen as a transportation fuel and in other applications, is presented. Contents: long-term trends in energy consumption and in availability and cost of conventional fuel; energy and the environment; characteristics of alternative fuels; clean energy sources; technology for gaseous hydrogen production; technology for cryofuel production; experience from liquid-hydrogen space application; and from the TU-155 experimental aircraft; aeroengines for alternative fuels; alternative fuels in aviation and in ground transportation.
