Impact of demagnetization on magnetocaloric effect in pure gadolinium.

Summary

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the temperature dependence of magnetic field strength distribution in pure gadolinium operating in the vicinity of its Curie temperature. This is achieved by solving simultaneously the energy and magnetostatic equations with variable properties under transient boundary conditions. The computational domain consists in a three-dimensional gadolinium sheet with a low aspect ratio (i.e. thin sheet). Results reveal that the material is locally subject to non-negligible magnetization losses that influence considerably the magnetocaloric effect. Losses are observed namely along the interface separating the inside and outside zones of the applied field. A general numerical approach is proposed to tackle demagnetizing effects on active magnetic regenerator performance.
