Magnetocaloric effect in Ni-Mn-Ga Heusler alloys.

Summary

The region of compositions is determined on ternary Ni-Mn-Ga Heusler alloy phase diagram for which the coupled magnetostructural transition, accompanied by a giant magnetocaloric effect is observed. The results of direct measurements of the magnetic field induced entropy change in Ni-Mn-Ga alloy in quasi isothermal regime are presented. It is shown that the largest entropy changes in magnetic field 26 kOe are equal to 9 J/kgK at turning the field on at 338 K and to 11 J/kgK at turning the field off at 344 K. These experimental data are compared with the theoretical results, obtained by the help of statistical and molecular field theory of magnetostructural phase transition in ferromagnetic alloys. The possibility of application of Ni-Mn-Ga alloy as working body in thermodynamic Carnot cycle based near room temperature operating cooler scheme is discussed.
