Summary

Analysis of domestic refigerator operation shows variations in cabinet temperature of about 12 K, due mainly to door openings and control method. Temperature zones of 2 and 9 deg C are desirable for domestic storage. An experimental cabinet with two compartments was cooled by fan circulation of air, either recirculated or from a cold eutectic store. Air damper control kept temperatures much nearer to requirements. The system evaporator froze a calcium chloride eutectic in 8 containers arranged in a 2-pass air cooling path. The eutectic was cooled by long period compressor operation on night tariff. Day running for emergency only. Test results gave close temperature control with good recovery from door openings and rapid cooling of warm food. Approximate costs are given. D.W.H.
