Summary

This paper presents an indirect cooling refrigeration system with variable air cooler capacity. This refrigeration unit was designed to meet vegetable storage technical and technological requirements along with contemporary environmental requirements to use natural fluids as refrigerants. In order to determine the actual benefits of the discussed solution, a 6-month storage test was conducted. Carrots of the same quality were loaded into two identical storage chambers. Evaluation of carrot quality after test was carried out. Results revealed that the commercial quality of carrots stored in the tested chamber equipped with the innovative cooling unit was significantly better than that of the carrots stored in a control chamber fitted with a standard unit. The paper presents a design for the applied refrigeration unit and the standard unit as well as the differences in air and product temperatures during storage test. The differences in relative humidity in both chambers during the test were also presented.
