Summary

Customers want smaller, quieter units. However, it is difficult to reconcile these aspects: this is a challenge for manufacturers. The 1998 catalogue of Eurovent certified products publishes statistics concerning the acoustic properties of these products. In the determination of characteristics, the notion of sound power dominated the more random pressure considerations. Cetiat (Centre technique des industries aérauliques et thermiques) has performed a study on fan and air-conditioning plant noise, using a prototype helix, the aim being to define improvements in the geometry of the fan blades. An interview with Jean-Marc Dautin, an acoustics engineer, completes this file.
