DESCRIBES SOME OF THE FINDINGS CONTAINED IN THE RESULTS OF A 5 YEAR STUDY ON INDOOR AIR QUALITY IN PUBLIC BUILDINGS. NOTES THAT MORE THAN 500 DIFFERENT ORGANIC COMPOUNDS WERE DETECTED, MANY WERE 100 TIMES MORE CONCENTRATED INDOORS AND MANY ARE SUSPECTED CARCINOGENS. STATES THE 3MOST COMMON DENOMINATORS OF < SICK BUILDINGS > WERE FOUND TO BE POOR VENTILATION, INADEQUATE FILTRATION AND LACK OF HYGIENE IN THE VENTILATION SYSTEMS. IN OVER 80% OF THE PROBLEM BUILDINGS THE UNDERLYING CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM WAS FAULTY OPERATION OF THE EQUIPMENT AND/OR POOR MAINTENANCE.
