Summary

THIS IS THE DESCRIPTION OF THE OVERHAUL OF AN EXISTING COLD STORE SYSTEM. THE EVAPORATORS, ORIGINALLY FLOOR MOUNTED AIR-COOLERS WITH CENTRIFUGAL FANS AND DUCTING, WERE REPLACED WITH OVERHEAD MOUNTED AXIAL FAN UNITS. THE DEFROST SYSTEM WAS CHANGED FROM GLYCOL SPRAYS TO A HOT-GAS SYSTEM USING HIGH-SIDE FLOATS TO CONTROL THE OUTLET OF CONDENSATE WHEN DEFROSTING. REFRIGERANT DISTRIBUTION REMAINED BY PUMP CIRCULATION. A CONTROL ARRANGEMENT MODULATED THE NUMBER OF EVAPORATORS BEING USED AT ANY ONE TIME OUT OF THE 36 INSTALLED. THE NET RESULT WAS AN INCREDIBLE REDUCTION OF 46% IN THE ENERGY CONSUMED GIVING A RETURN OF 50% IN THE FIRST YEAR ON THE OVERHAUL COST. D.W.H.
