Summary

Cold chain logistics involves the storage and transportation of perishable and temperature-sensitive products throughout the supply chain, where strict temperature control is essential to ensure product quality, typically 2–8 °C for pharmaceuticals, 0 °C to −29 °C for frozen foods, and 0–16 °C for fresh produce. These generalized temperature ranges are further narrowed for specific products; for example, red blood cells (RBCs) should be stored at an average temperature of approximately 4 °C. The air temperature of a cold storage box can be more effectively maintained by using phase change materials (PCMs), which store and release latent heat to provide efficient cooling. In this study, a system simulating the winter outdoor temperatures of Turkey’s first zone, within a range of 5–13 °C, was operated with a cold storage box placed inside the system cabin. The change in the internal air temperature of the cold storage box was examined both with and without PCMs. Water was selected as PCM.The appropriate PCM amounts and locations of PCM bottles were determined for the cold storage designed to store red blood cells at an average temperature of 4 °C. Experimental results showed that PCM bottles with a total volume of 44 mL placed on the four walls of the storage box, provided the required average temperature of 4 oC for storing red blood cells without requiring additional energy. In conclusion, the results indicate that a PCM-based cold storage box could serve as an effective alternative for the practical storage and logistics of red blood cells.
