Influence of different correlations to estimate the heat transfer coefficients on the prediction of the performance of a microchannel condenser.

Summary
In the last two decades, the microchannel heat exchangers are getting more and more popular in several industrial sectors, therefore many researchers have focused their efforts on modeling these devices. Based on different approaches, such as the application of the energy conservation equations to every control volume or the e-NTU methodology, the semi-empirical models for calculating the performance of a heat exchanger provide significantly different results, depending on the correlations used for the evaluation of the heat transfer coefficients. For this reason, the authors have discussed in a previous work about the best way for validating condenser model. The main conclusion was that the agreement between the results of model and experimental data can be maximized, only if the best combination of correlations for calculating the heat transfer coefficients on both the heat exchanger sides is properly identified. The same validation methodology has been used in this work for optimizing the results provided by a microchannel condenser model. With this end, two set of experimental data have been used. The first one includes the data obtained testing a 33 multiport plate tube microchannel condenser in a wide range of different operating points. They have been used for the identification of the most suitable combination of the heat transfer coefficient correlations. Later, the results of the optimized model have been compared against the second set of experimental data. Considering five new heat exchangers
working in several operating conditions, the results of the latter validation show that, once optimized, the model is able to simulate with high accuracy the performance of any microchannel condenser.
