FOUR TYPES OF PUNNET (MADE FROM WOOD PULP, BLUE PVC, TRANSPARENT PVC AND WHITE POLYETHYLENE)WERE TESTED WITH FRUITS OF CV ELSANTA AND CV KORONA UNDER 5 DIFFERENT CONDITIONS: STORAGE OF SHAKEN AND UNSHAKEN FRUITS AT ROOM TEMPERATURE OR AT 283 K (10 DEG C) FOR 24 H AND STORAGE OF UNSHAKEN FRUITS AT 276 K (3 DEG C) FOR 72 H. THE FRUITS WERE SHAKEN, TO SIMULATE TRANSPORT, BY PLACING THE PUNNETS ON A HORIZONTAL SHAKER FOR 60 MIN. WHEN THE FRUITS WERE SHAKEN, THE WOOD PULP PUNNET CAUSED THE LEAST BRUISING AND THE POLYETHYLENE PUNNET TEO. TRANSPIRATION LOSSES WERE GREATEST IN THE WOOD PULP PUNNET, AND LEAST IN THE PVC PUNNETS. FRUIT ROT WAS NOT INFLUENCED BY PUNNET MATERIAL, BUT ELSANTA SHOWED MORE DECAYED FRUIT THAN KORONA. (POSTHARVEST NEWS INF., GB., 2, N 2, 1991/04, 541.
