Summary
Crisphead lettuce plants (cultivars Marius and Saladin) were supplied with 50-200 kg N/ha. Heads were stored for one or 2 weeks at 1 deg C in cold storage or ice bank cooling. It was concluded that to obtain heads from storage with relatively high dry matter, sugar and vitamin C contents and a relatively low nitrate content, the N fertilizer rate must be as low as possible. It is also recommended that heads be stored for as short a time as possible.
