Summary

Emergence of new refrigerants gives new challenges also in the field of refrigerating compressor development. To reduce costs one may consider deployment of compressors designed for one refrigerant with only small improvements for the new agent. However, depending on compressor type, number of unwanted effects of dynamic nature caused by pressure pulsations and vibrations may be the result of refrigerant change. The paper contains description of a real case of refrigeration piston machines working in special purpose cooling system. In the last two years a number of failures occurred on those machines. Due to the importance of system a series of varied studies were performed to understand the cause. Among many, numerical simulations of pulsating gas flow were also included. The paper presents them along with the real measurement records. In addition, it is demonstrated what influence on pulsation level type of compressed agent might have.
