Summary
A serious problem is unfolding in parts of Australia as a result of two recent regulations. The first of these restricts the use of chromate-based inhibitors and their substitution by chromate-free compounds which take up to 10 times as long to build up a protective coating. Secondly, legislation now requires that some cooling towers are disinfected regularly with chlorine. This removes the protective coating from the inside of metal pipes. Corrosion rates are up to 30 times as high, with extensive pitting and tubercule formation. Various suggestions are offered to limit this damage. A.R.T.
