Internal regeneration of the adsorption process.

Author(s) : AITTOMAKI A., HARKONEN M.

Summary

Internal adsorption as a method to improve the COP of the simple basic adsorption heat pumping process are studied by means of a temperature-enthalpy diagram. This diagram illustrates the available amount of internal regeneration when uniform temperature of the adsorbent bed at the end of the heating and cooling phases are assumed. Two examples are given, one for the pair methanol-zeolite and one for water-zeolite. A simple formula is derived, which gives the COP of the regenerative process depending only on the COP of the basic process and on the degree of regeneration. Possibilities of improving the performance of the so-called thermal wave process were studied numerically, and a new regenerative cycle is presented. This cycle gives clearly higher COP-values than the original cycle proposed by Tchernev and Shelton.
