Solid sorption: an alternative to CFCs.

La sorption solide : une alternative aux CFC.

Author(s) : MEUNIER F.

Summary

Solid sorption systems operating with closed cycles (in contrast with desiccant cooling) are reviewed with special attention given to the complementarity between the systems. Limits and possibilities are analyzed in terms of both COP and cooling rates. Recent breakthroughs on composite materials as well as on multistaged or thermal wave cycles should bring these systems to competitivity very soon. If cooling COPs of about 1, with cooling rates in the range of 300 to 1000 watts/kg of solid sorbent, are achieved, these systems will most probably be the alternative to CFC refrigeration.
