Interrelation of magnetic phase diagram and magnetic refrigerator performance.

Summary

An expression for field-dependent heat capacity is presented that is parameterized by the field dependence of the transition temperature. Integration of this expression with respect to temperature yields entropy curves that approximate that of a conceptual material with a first order phase transition. Integrating again with respect to temperature yields field dependent Gibbs free energy curves. Equilibrium phase boundaries can be calculated from these curves and the non-equilibrium magnetic phase diagram can be calculated by using thermal hysteresis as a parameter. This phase diagram approximates the form of experimentally determined phase diagrams for several first-order magnetocaloric alloys. These diagrams can be used to guide the specification of magnetic refrigeration system components such as magnet arrays and regenerators.
