Investigation of nucleation and heat transfer for subcooled flow boiling on microfin surfaces.

Summary

Heat transfer characteristics of a flat microfin surface in subcooled flow boiling with water at atmospheric pressure were obtained as functions of the microfin orientation and Reynolds number. A description of the test rig is given. The heat transfer performance of the microfin geometry in the non-boiling (single-phase) and boiling regions was obtained over a Reynolds number range from 2055 to 6165 and compared with the plain surface performance. For the microfin surface, nucleation started as soon as positive wall superheat was attained, while for plain surfaces a wall superheat of 2 to 3 deg C was required for inception of nucleation. Video images were also obtained.
