Boiling heat transfer in an evaporator tube with a star-shaped insert.

Author(s) : WELLSANDT S., VAMLING L.

Summary

A test facility was modified to provide the means for R22 measurements on a four-meter evaporator tube equipped with a ten channel star-shaped insert. The purpose of the work is to investigate the applicability of heat transfer and pressure drop correlations derived for smooth tubes for this kind of inserts. Different correlations for the calculation of heat transfer and pressure drop were used. The only adjustment due to different geometry is the implementation of the tube's hydraulic diameter. It was found that the calculated heat transfer was between 30 and 50% higher than the measured, while pressure drop was calculated to more or less 3% of the measured values. Possible causes are discussed.
