Investigation of return air grille width on the efficiency of recirculated air .curtains

Number: pap. ID: 939

Author(s) : HAMMOND E.

Summary

Although the refrigerated multi-deck display cabinet commonly used in supermarkets has been researched at great length, the focus has always been on the specifics of the air supply rather than the air return. This paper describes a study of the effect of return air grille width on cabinet heat load for the simplified case of a refrigerated air curtain sealing an open fronted cavity. Particle image velocimetry, vane and fine wire anemometry were all used to map velocity profiles of air curtains for a range of discharge velocities and return air grille widths. The results are then used to discuss potential for improved return air grille design.
