Investigation of table-like entropy change around room temperature in La(0.75)Ca(0.25-x)Sr(x)MnO(3) manganites.

Summary

A detailed investigation of the magneto-caloric effect of polycrystalline La(0.75)Ca(0.25-x)Sr(x)MnO(3) (x= 0.1, 0.25) for possible applications in magnetic refrigeration is presented. A broad and almost constant magnetic entropy change over a temperature span of 60 K is observed in this composition around the Curie temperature of 280 K. This is often referred to as a "table-like" entropy change. This composition on the other hand showed a conventional "carrot-like" entropy. The table-like entropy change around room temperature is favourable for magnetic refrigeration technology due to the fact that the range in which the materials can be utilized is extended. In the x= 0.1 composition a cluster glass behaviour is observed below the Curie temperature which signifies a complex magnetic state. The table-like entropy around the Curie temperature is attributed to the combination of magnetoelastic coupling in the paramagnetic and the complex magnetic state in the ferromagnetic region.
