Type of article: Periodical article

Summary

THE VARIOUS METHODS OF IRRADIATING FOOD ARE DISCUSSED AND DETA ILS ARE GIVEN OF THE DOSE RATE IN KILOGRAYS FOR A NUMBER OF PROCESSES RANGING FROM SEED DISINFESTATION TO STERILIZATION. THE USE AND ECONOMICS OF IRRADIATION TO CONTROL INSECTS, IN PARTICULAR THE FRUIT FLY, ARE DISCUSSED AND COMPARED WITH EARLIER TREATMENT USING ETHYLENE DIBROMIDE, WHICH WAS BANNED IN 1984. THE FOOD PRODUCTS WHICH HAVE BEEN CLEARED BY THE US FOOD AND DRUGS ADMINISTRATION ARE TABULATED AND THE ACCEPTANCE OF IRRADIATION TREATMENT BY OTHER WORLD FOOD AND GOVERNMENT AGENCIES IS ALSO REVIEWED. CONSUMER ACCEPTANCE REMAINS A PROBLEM LARGELY DUE TO MISUNDERSTANDING AND LACK OF INFORMATION. G.R.S.
